About the area
Destin started as a fishing village and the harbor is still the heart of it. Charter boats go out every morning, and on a summer afternoon half the town seems to be anchored at Crab Island.
Property here runs from harbor-front condos to beach houses on Holiday Isle and family neighborhoods north of Highway 98. Prices are higher than in Panama City Beach, and so is rental demand in season.
The lay of the land
Destin sits on a narrow peninsula in Okaloosa County, between the Gulf and Choctawhatchee Bay. East Pass connects the two at the west end, under the Marler Bridge to Okaloosa Island. Highway 98 runs the length of town. Henderson Beach State Park keeps a long stretch of dunes undeveloped in the middle, and Miramar Beach and Sandestin begin where the county line crosses into Walton.
